Project Apollo: Exploring the Moon - Pocket Space Guide #6
by Robert Godwin

$9.95

ISBN 978 1 897959 37 7

This complex framework of technology is so thoroughly compounded it is all but impossible to isolate one event without accounting for innumerable others. Space travel would not have been possible without the endless chain of contributors dating back to the beginning of history, but there are clearly defined moments in the record when someone, or something, intervenes and provides the impetus to propel us to unforeseen heights. Such was the case with America’s Apollo program.

As has been outlined in this book’s companion volume (Project Apollo – The Test Program) the moon landings of the 1960’s and 70’s would not have been possible without an improbable chain of events culminating in the exhortation of a young President, calling his nation to greatness. Long after many of the 20th century’s great litany of achievements are forgotten, people will remember Tranquillity Base and they will recall the names of the heroes who risked their lives to make their species the first in four billion years to venture into the cosmos. In a very, very long list of human achievements, Apollo is extraordinary.

Facts and images for Apollo missions 12 through 17 are covered in this concise guide to the program's essentials—mission objectives, dates, flight plans, astronauts, space suits, and vehicles—for collectors, educators, space enthusiasts, and those just discovering the history of the space program

REFERENCE GUIDE TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION COOPERATION IN ORBIT
By: Gary Kitmacher

$21.95

ISBN: 978-1-894959-34-6

The International Space Station is a unique exploit in international cooperation, an unparalleled technical and political achievement.  It is the latest step in humankind’s quest to explore and live in space. The results of research done on the ISS will enable us to improve life on Earth, and provide us with the knowledge and experience necessary before we can journey to other worlds.

As of mid-2006, the ISS has been continuously crewed for more than 5 years and is about 50 percent complete.  There are 16 station elements in orbit today, nine elements ready for launch at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and  another six elements in process at various international partner sites.  To date, there have been more than 50 flights to the ISS, including flights for assembly, crew rotation and logistical support.

The ISS is currently operating with a crew of three.  Its assembly will continue through the year 2010. and as it grows, its capabilities will increase, requiring a larger crew. Currently, 16 countries are involved designing, building, launching and manning the ISS.

This book is designed to provide a broad overview of the International Space Station’s complex configuration, design, and component systems.  As well, the sophisticated procedures required in the Station’s construction and operation are presented.

INCLUDES:
266 color photographs, 198 color Illustrations, 25 color tables, 2 color charts

SPACE SHUTTLE - Pocket Space Guide #10
by Robert Godwin

$9.95

ISBN 9781894959520

The concept for a reusable winged space vehicle has been a dream since the early 20th century. In 1981 the United States launched the first such vehicle, Columbia, and proved that winged spacecraft could work. Now, due to political pressure, the Orbiter fleet is slated to be decommissioned, but not before it fulfills its original mandate—to build a permanent space station.

This Pocket Space Guide, #10 in the series, details the exploits of the Space Shuttle fleet through triumph and tragedy, as it carried more than 300 people, 40 space laboratories and more than 60 satellites into space. From the first test flights to the détente missions to Russia’s Mir space station, thousands of facts can be found in this Space Shuttle Fact Archive.

PROJECT CONSTELLATION - Pocket Space Guide # 9
by Tim McElyea

$9.95
ISBN 978-1-894959-49-0

Project Constellation is NASA's initiative to develop a replacement for the aging Space Shuttle. It's main goal is to provide spacecraft for returning to the Moon by the year 2020. This Pocket Space Guide, #9 in the series, gives the background information on how the program was formed and what it is destined to accomplish.

Details are given for all of the elements of the Project Constellation, from the Lunar Precursor Robotic Program to the Orion spacecraft, Ares launch vehicles, and the Lunar Surface Access Module. Project Constellation is realizing President Bush's "Vision" for space and this book chronicles the progress and outlines the plans for tomorrow.

Sex in Space

By: Laura Woodmansee

200 Pages, 2006,

$17.95
ISBN 9781894959445

Sex in Space reveals the truth about romantic rendezvous in Earth orbit and beyond. Author Laura S. Woodmansee separates the hard facts from the sci-fi stories.

Has anyone "done it" in space? How would two people make love in zero gravity, or on our low-gravity Moon? Discover the physics and science of sex and reproduction in space. The age of space tourism is just beginning! Hotel suites are being designed for zero-g sex in Earth orbit and on the Moon. Earthlings will soon be able to join the "100-Mile High" club. Learn what the space agencies are too embarrassed to talk about. Find out if NASA and the Russian Space Agency have run secret sex experiments.

There are very serious consequences of biological reproduction in space; NASA is considering sending multi gendered crews to Mars for years at a time. What if a crew member becomes pregnant? Does NASA sanction an off world abortion, or even more serious, does the baby get born? If it is born off world, what are it’s chances of survival on the trip home? Could the foetus even develop properly in a different gravity regime? Could it survive living on Earth after the trip home?

What will happen to the first baby conceived in space? Future humans will be born in space or on colonies on the Moon and Mars. Discover how they might differ from Earth-born humans. Sex in Space balances the giggle factor with the more serious scientific questions that arise when we think about the possibilities of sexual reproduction in space. This book covers everything that you think it does, and a lot more! Learn what the space agencies are too embarrassed to talk about. How would two people make love in zero gravity? Discover the physics and science of sex in space and what devices might assist lovers in space.

Learn how reproduction in space is different than on Earth. Find out what government space agencies are not researching and why. The age of space tourism is just beginning and honeymoons in space have already been booked! Sex in zero-gravity is the 'killer app' of space tourism. Hotel suites are being designed for zero-gravity sex in Earth orbit  and Earthlings will soon be able to join the "100-Mile High" club.

Spaceships
by Robert A. Goehlich

$19.95

ISBN 978-1894959-506,

A Reference Guide to International Reusable Launch Vehicle Concepts from 1944 to the Present

Space transportation is one of the most essential elements for enabling activities in space.

For current rockets, reliability is too low and launch cost is too high when compared to aircraft operations. Reusable Launch Vehicles could solve these deficiencies and are being investigated by many companies. This book contains a databank of 300 worldwide suborbital and orbital Reusable Launch Vehicle concepts. It covers ideas from the first concepts, such as Silver Bird, proposed by Eugen Saenger in 1944, to present ones such as SpaceShipOne, proposed by Burt Rutan in 2003, as well as all X Prize candidates. For reader friendly use, all information is prepared in the same data style, which makes this book a unique reference for rocket scientists as well as everybody interested in and fascinated by rockets. An introduction to space transportation systems, a study on the motivation for developing Reusable Launch Vehicles and a discussion about the benefit of an international Reusable Launch Vehicle program complete this book.

Robert A. Goehlich was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1975. He studied Aerospace Engineering at the Technical University Berlin from 1996 to 2000 and received his Ph.D. in 2003. He worked at the Israel Institute of Technology (Haifa, Israel), at the University of Washington (Seattle, USA), at the National Aerospace Laboratory (Tokyo, Japan) and at EADS Space (Kourou Spaceport, French Guiana). Since 2003 he has lectured at Keio University (Yokohama, Japan) and working with the Future Space Transportation System Team at Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA (Tokyo, Japan). He has created and lectured world's first "Space Tourism" and "Economics of Space" courses. At JAXA his investigations are focused on cost optimization for current and future space transportation systems and improvement of aerospace organizations effectiveness.

Kids to Space: A Space Traveler's Guide
by Lonnie Jones Schorer

$29.95, ISBN: 1894959426

Based on an imaginary trip to space with America's school children, Kids to Space: A Space Traveler's Guide is a comprehensive collection of children's questions about traveling to and living in space. From black holes to possible destinations, from group dynamics to weightlessness, from medical concerns to space communities, internationally recognized experts in each field provide answers to 100 different categories of student questions, making the book a fascinating space guide, not just for kids but for all who have ever wondered about the universe and dreamed of what it would be like to be a space traveler.

In his foreword, Gemini XII and Apollo XI Astronaut Buzz Aldrin encourages students to take advantage of opportunities, many of which are related to future space exploration and discoveries.

In a letter to teachers, Astronaut and Space Shuttle Commander Rick Searfoss lends his support, emphasizing that children's contributions are an important part of the dream.

In responding to "Would YOU go to space?" students provided insight into why they would or would not personally go to space. Statistical results will be included in the book.

Educators throughout the US who participated in the Kids to Space project were excited to get the kids thinking about tomorrow. Students, ages 5-18, were excited to be asked to participate in planning for humankind's future in space. The experts, including astronauts, educators, astronomers, doctors, engineers, scientists and architects were excited to be challenged, and sometimes stumped, by the questions. Sometimes they had to readjust their ideas of what they thought they knew in order to answer some of the students' questions.

Hundreds of student illustrations, brilliant depictions of what it would be like to live in or travel to space, will be included on an accompanying CD/ROM.

From science fiction to accessible reality, Kids to Space: A Space Traveler's Guide serves as a timely message to children that the space future is in their hands, and we welcome their help in planning for it now.

ISSCAPADES,
The Crippling of America's Space Program

by Donald A. Beattie (Former senior manager at NASA)

26 pages (232), all black & white, 19 drawings, 5 photos, 11 tables, 432 footnotes, includes an Index

$23.95 , ISBN 9781894959599, 232p

Donald A. Beattie, a former senior manager at the National Science Foundation, Energy Research and Development Administration, Department of Energy and NASA, served on the Space Station Advisory Committee from 1987 to 1994. He recounts the evolution of this troubled program from the perspective of a participant and close observer who worked side by side with many of the early NASA Space Station managers. He pulls no punches in describing the political and managerial conflicts that resulted in severely compromising a major international program that may never achieve the research goals envisioned when first announced by President Reagan in 1984. Beattie’s last book, Taking Science to the Moon (2001), is also a NASA insider’s account of the successful struggle in the 1960s to convince NASA management to include critical lunar science experiments on the Apollo missions.

ON TO MARS 2 - Exploration and Settling A New World

by Dr. Frank Crossman and Dr. Robert Zubrin

2005, p264, soft cover, Includes CD-ROM
ISBN 1-894959-30-2
$22.95

In 1998 Dr. Robert Zubrin brought into being The Mars Society, and thousands of people from around the world have flocked to his red, green, and blue banner. People from all walks of life have shown support for the exploration and settlement of Mars.

Each year the Mars Society holds its annual conference, when experts and enthusiasts can meet to present and exchange ideas and information. This book and the included CD-ROM contain over 130 papers and essays that have been presented at these Mars Society Annual Conferences.

Increasingly in the last three years, the conference has served as a venue for reviewing the previous season's experience of about one hundred volunteers who have served as crew at the Mars Society's Analog Research Stations at Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada and at Hanksville, Utah, USA. The interaction of analog research station crews during the Mars Society Conferences has resulted in planning and execution of ever more realistic simulations of the habitat infrastructure, exploration techniques, and organization among the crew members. This iterative improvement process is documented in many of the papers in this second of the "On to Mars" series.

Although some aspects of exploring and colonizing Mars still need refining and fine tuning, the lion's share of the technology and the understanding of the human condition are already in existence. The major missing factor is simply the realization and the commitment necessary to begin. The people of the Mars Society are working to educate and convince the political powers, the industry leaders, and you and me. We all have a stake in this.

Many of the diverse specializations and concerns of Mars missions are introduced and explained in this book.

SATURN
by Alan Lawrie
2005, p300, soft cover, Includes CD-ROM, ISBN 1894959191
$27.95

SIGNED COPY:
$550.00,
36/198,  Saturn V Restoration Fund Signature Edition. With Certificate of Authenticity by  The Wernher Von Braun Rocket Team Members.

Saturn V was the largest, most powerful rocket ever produced. Developed in the 1960s, in response to President Kennedy's call for a moon landing by the end of the decade, it rose from the drawing board to flight vehicle in record time. The rocket was masterminded by Wernher Von Braun and did not fail in any of its flights.

The story of the moon missions is well known with many books and films on the subject. Little has been written on the Saturn V rocket and next to nothing on the development, manufacturing and testing of the rocket stages.

In this book, for the first time ever, the detailed story of the history of each Saturn V stage is presented. This includes the 45 flight stages built and all of the various test stages. Most of the stages ended up being launched. Some are in museums, some were destroyed on the ground and some are so obscure they are detailed for the first time in this book.

The book traces each stage from the start of manufacturing, through assembly, testing, static firing and transport to the Kennedy Space Center. Facilities across the US were used to manufacture and test the hardware at a pace demanded by the Kennedy pronouncement. Engines were built by Rocketdyne and the rocket stages by Boeing, North American Aviation and the Douglas Company. Testing took place in Santa Susana, Sacramento, Mississippi and other facilities around the country. There were many problems along the way and all are covered in a detail never published before. Stages blew up, materials disintegrated, engines exploded.

The development of the F1 and J2 rocket engines is covered as well as details of all the major manufacturing and testing facilities.

Throughout, unprecedented details of dates, times, events and parameters are presented.
Other unique aspects of the book include:

  • details of the history of each and every engine on each stage including a log of engine allocation
  • details of the transportation of each stage and engine by various means such as truck, barge, boat, super Guppy aircraft including a unique log of these trips
  • details of every firing including timelines, test stands, problems, performance details plus logs of each firing on each stage

To supplement the book many photographs that have never been published before have been obtained and appear for the first time.

The location of the remaining hardware is identified with photographs of the museum pieces.
Research for the book has taken over two years and included unique access to all the major facilities and NASA history offices and libraries. Information has been obtained from Saturn veterans and also through the Freedom of Information Act.

In summary this book has the first ever comprehensive presentation of the complete Saturn stage and engines activities from the early 1960s to the conclusion of the program in the mid 1970s.
Bonus CD-ROM includes rare film footage.

REFLECTIONS From Earth Orbit

by Captain Winston E. Scott USN Retired
2005, p128, soft cover, ISBN 1894959221
$23.95

In spite of the recent loss of the space shuttle Columbia, there are those who believe in the seemingly routine nature of space flight. The author's experiences however confirm the tremendous curiosity and overall fascination the world maintains for flying in space. As a public speaker, he talks regularly to thousands of people of all ages and from every walk of life. These audience members universally are inquisitive about life in space and the makeup of the individuals who form the corps of contemporary space explorers.

Reflections From Earth Orbit is not your typical "how do you go to the bathroom in space" book. It is a book about life as told through the memories, or reflections, of the author navy Captain Winston Scott. These reflections were prompted by events that occurred during two space shuttle missions as a NASA astronaut aboard the space shuttles Endeavour and Columbia.

It has been written that Capt. Scott's journey to the stars is a testament to perseverance and vision. Reflections is his attempt to share some of the experiences that drove him to overcome his life's obstacles and become one of a select few who journeyed beyond the bonds of earth into outer space.

Through Reflections the author takes the reader into space. He gives vivid descriptions of life in space emphasizing the everyday aspects of living with which the average, everyday person is curious and to which he or she can relate. As his memory is jogged by an event in space, Capt. Scott relates a fascinating story with lessons learned from his past. He has succeeded in capturing the essence of life in space and sharing the space flight experience with the reader.
Although not every chapter follows this exact format, e.g. Where Have You Gone Sky King, Reflections will entertain, educate, and inspire a general audience. In other words, one does not have to be a space enthusiast to enjoy Reflections.

THE REAL SPACE COWBOYS
by Ed Buckbee with Wally Schirra

 2005, 200p., soft cover, ISBN 1894959213

$ 29.95

In 1959, seven U.S. military fighter pilots were selected to train as America's first astronauts. Alan Shepard, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra and Deke Slayton would become known as the Mercury Seven (M7). These men, who had jockeyed for the best flying jobs in the military, began competing for rides on rockets. Most would eventually vie for the ultimate ride to the moon.

The author Ed Buckbee, who has enjoyed a 40+ year association with the U.S. manned space flight program, follows these brave men who pioneered the U.S. space program. Through time and personal friendships, he captures dreams of flying higher, faster and farther than anyone in the known universe. Readers are invited behind the scenes to witness the competition between chimpanzees and astronauts, and the conflict between NASA engineers designing capsules and those who would pilot them. Through this book, readers feel the collective will of a nation to defeat the Russians in an all-out space race via an American team of 400,000 engineers, technicians, astronauts and support personnel who performed as if the country were at war.

The eras of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo-- these were times of nobility and humility, but also times of arrogance, tension, and from time-to-time, humor. "Gotcha's" were commonplace astronaut pranks and a dubious answer to the question, "Are you a turtle?" resulted in a healthy bar tab.

In Wernher von Braun, discover a man who was committed to living in a new frontier. His words, "late to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise," are a testament to multi-tasking. Von Braun, the German-born rocket scientist and visionary of space flight, convinced presidents and congressmen to spend millions exploring space for peaceful purposes.

But what of our first space heroes after the Apollo program was completed? Accepting the call of Project Mercury meant a lifetime commitment. Their work continued with motivational programs for youth through the U.S. Space Camp programs, public programs at institutions such as the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, and others. The author himself shared the task of motivating the next generation through creation of U.S. Space Camp and the Astronaut Hall of Fame.

Shepard is a prominent figure in the book. Together, he and the author prepared anniversary presentations, articles and TV interviews. They traveled to seven countries and more than twenty-five states marketing and opening Space Camps. They designed, developed and built the U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. As Shepard proclaimed upon Buckbee's retirement from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, "He's a space relic. We need to keep him and put him on exhibit in that space museum and when he dies, bury him next to that damn monkey."

ATLAS The Ultimate Weapon

by Chuck Walker with Joel Powell

2005, 304, soft cover,  ISBN 1-894959-18-3
$29.95

Atlas - The Ultimate Weapon is the story of the Atlas rocket, Americas first Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), and workhorse of the civil and military space programs since the late 1950s.

The book is written by Chuck Walker, a participant in the Atlas program starting in 1953 with the prime contractor, Convair-Astronautics. Mr. Walker began his career with Convair as a test engineer for Atlas, later moving to the Test Planning Group and then became manager of Program Control for Atlas. In his role of establishing the schedules of all work done at Convair-Astronautics, Mr. Walker came to know personally many of the people who were responsible for running the Atlas program. It was these people that Mr. Walker approached to tell the story of the Atlas program in their own words.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part covers the military career of Atlas from conception through to the costly development and deployment of the weapon system at bases scattered throughout the United States. Chapters 1 through 3 cover the genesis of the program through work on the MX-774 prototype missile. Chapters 4 through 12 discuss the Atlas design, its production and test facilities, and development testing to the point of Initial Operational Capability of the Atlas ICBM. Chapters 13 through 15 describe the activation of the initial Strategic Air Command squadrons, the training facilities that supported them, and the subsequent deactivation of the Atlas squadrons in 1965 when the Minuteman missile took over the nuclear deterent role from Atlas.

The second part of the book relates to the role of Atlas in Americas space programs from the late 1950s to the present day. Chapters 17 and 18 describe the high-performance Centaur upper stage used for communication satellite and space probe launches, as well as the versatile Agena stage. The Project Mercury manned space flights with Atlas are also covered in detail. Part Two closes with a look back on the Atlas program from the personal perspective of some of the key participants. The appendices list the flight history of the Atlas and also detail key program events and milestones. Biographies of prominent Atlas managers and the contributors to this book are also included. The book is profusely illustrated with over 100 black-and-white photographs from the Convair archives, many of which have never been published before, and there is also a section of spectacular color photographs. The original version of Atlas will be retired by the time this book is released, but parts of the Atlas legacy lives on in the form of the Centaur upper stage (and even its famous name) in the Atlas V replacement vehicle built by the Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Moon RushImproving life On Earth with the Moon’s Resources
   by Dennis Wingo
2004, Soft Cover, ISBN 1-894959-10-8
   $24.95

If by some magic process humanity was able to go to the stars tomorrow and find habitable worlds we would probably want to design a society based upon modern technology. We can't do this but we can look at our Earthbound society and think about how to redesign it so that it will work better. It is like a giant game of the SIMS but in the real world. This book examines how the exploration of space, specifically a commercial base on the Moon and Mars would transform our economies on the Earth as surely as the discovery of the New World transformed the old world of Europe. From Platinum Group Metals for fuel cells, manufacturing high tech metals and robots to the building of a fusion reactor, the Moon holds great promise for a high tech manufacturing future.

This book takes a look and imagines how a world with such resources could be designed for our future. 260 pages.

2000, 200p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-896522-61-0
$18.95

From Back Cover:

"Lost in the glare of Apollo’s success, the Gemini program is often forgotten. Without the ten successful manned Gemini missions NASA could not have accomplished Kennedy’s seemingly impossible goal of landing a man on the moon in the 1960s.

"Gemini 6 was the fifth manned flight of America’s two-man spacecraft. Aboard were Commander Wally Schirra and rookie pilot Tom Stafford. Their original mission flight plan was to attempt the first ever docking and rendezvous in space, an essential step if the pilots flying Apollo would ever be able to meet up in orbit around the moon.

"The Soviet Union had claimed the first space rendezvous but many felt that unless the pilot was in control and able to maneuver around the accompanying vehicle it could not truly be called a rendezvous.

"On October 25th 1965 the target vehicle, known as Atlas/Agena failed to make orbit and so the crew of Gemini 6 were suddenly presented with a totally revised and audacious flight plan. The long duration Gemini 7 mission was already scheduled for launch and so the crew of Gemini 6 were told that NASA would attempt a double manned mission and rendezvous.

"This was undoubtedly a risky proposition which would stretch the NASA infrastructure to its limits.

"On December 15th 1965 ace pilot Schirra and rendezvous maestro Stafford closed to within a meter of Gemini 7 and America was one step closer to the moon."

The Windows Bonus CD-ROM Features:
Over 50 minutes of 16mm film footage of Gemini 6; over 180 still pictures from Gemini 6; two movies about the Gemini program in nearly one hour of MPEG video; an exclusive inteview with Gemini 6 Commander Wally Schirra.

GEMINI 7 — The NASA Mission Reports
Compiled from the NASA archives and Edited by Robert Godwin
(Includes Exclusive Bonus CD-ROM)

2002, 208p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-896522-82-3
$19.95

From Back Cover:

"Some of the more essential facts of space flight were first explored on the 14-day mission of Gemini 7. The duration of the Gemini 7 flight was almost twice as long as the previous record time in orbit, and was calculated to be at least as long as a flight to the Moon, landing and return would require.

"The hardware and systems had already undergone extensive testing. Now it was time to test the men. What would be the medical effects of weightlessness and extremely confined conditions after two weeks in space – both physical and psychological? Would the astronauts be able to function normally for the two week period? Would there be any problems reacclimatizing to Earth conditions after the flight? Before Gemini 7 no one knew for certain.

"Commander Frank Borman and pilot James A. Lovell accomplished everything in their extensive and highly scheduled mission plan, and showed the world that men could function normally in space flight for the time required to fly an Apollo mission. Borman went on, in 1968, to command the first manned mission to orbit the Moon.

"In addition to their medical and scientific experiments, Gemini 7 also acted as the target vehicle for Gemini 6 in the first ever rendezvous of two manned spacecraft. This last-minute change in their mission plan allowed both Gemini 6 and 7 to perform close stationkeeping and fly-around of a manned spacecraft.

"In December 1965, Gemini 7 showed the world that man could live and work in space for extended periods without detrimental effects. Man could pursue his dream of a future in space.

The Windows Bonus CD-ROM Features:

"An exclusive interview with Captain James Lovell; A movie about the Gemini VII/VI mission; More than 400 high resolution images."

From Back Cover:

"October 1968 and the United States manned space program was about to be reborn. An entirely new space vehicle awaited its pilots at Pad 34.

"After 21 months the three-man Apollo space capsule had undergone a transformation. Over 1300 modifications had been made to the spacecraft following the tragic fire which had claimed the lives of the Apollo 1 crew.

"Now the three men who had lost their friends on that ill-fated mission were faced with the task of flying an all-new space vehicle. It was to be the first manned flight of America’s lunar spacecraft and it was to be the first manned launch of Wernher von Braun’s giant Saturn IB rocket.

"The prestigious task of commanding the first Apollo mission was given to Captain Walter M. Schirra, a veteran of America’s Gemini and Mercury programs. Accompanying him were Command Module Pilot, Major Donn Eisele, and physicist-civilian, Walter Cunningham – both were taking their first ride into space.

"Schirra, Eisele and Cunningham would be the first men to ride on a Saturn rocket and were then expected to fly the new spacecraft for the full length of a lunar mission. Every single onboard system would have to be tested and studied.

"Apollo 7 would be the longest first flight of any spacecraft or aircraft in the history of aviation.

"Incredibly, within nine months of this first manned Apollo mission, two Americans would fly the hardware to the Sea Of Tranquility.

From Back Cover:

"On March 3rd 1969 Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot Russell Schweickart would be the first people to fly in a true spacecraft. Although the insect-like Lunar Module had flown once before this was to be the first manned test. This would also be the first time that all of the Apollo hardware would be flown together and it would put many more pieces in place towards the goal of reaching the moon before the end of the decade.

"Fighting off pre-flight illnesses and a delayed launch the Apollo 9 crew flew a perfect 10 day mission, conducting important photographic research which returned some of the most beautiful pictures ever taken of the LEM floating above the blue oceans of Planet Earth.

"Apollo 9 The NASA Mission Reports finally puts in one place four of the most important documents from this auspicious flight, The Apollo 9 Press Kit, The Apollo 9 Preflight Mission Operation Report, The Apollo 9 Post Launch Mission Operation Report and The Apollo 9 Mission Operation Report Supplement.

"These four documents graphically illustrate the technology required to build a true space vehicle, a machine that can only perform its function in the harsh environment of space, and clearly illustrate the teamwork, dedication and professionalism of the flight crew and NASA support team.

The Windows Bonus CD-ROM Features:

"Three to Make Ready", and over 1300 pictures taken by the crew of Apollo 9.

"An accomplishment without parallel, the flight of Apollo 11 stands alone as humanity’s greatest feat of imagination made manifest.

Everything about project Apollo was an exercise in superlatives – the Saturn V was the largest and most powerful machine ever made by man, wielding an unimaginable seven million pounds of thrust while the Apollo spacecraft was able to travel a half a million miles and function with a precision to match the finest Swiss watch.

"Standing on the shoulders of generations, Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins heralded the arrival of a new era, an era in which the horizon of mankind’s dreams would be forever shifted.

"In Apollo 11 – The NASA Mission Reports some of the rare official documentation of this historic voyage is collected and made commercially available for the first time.

"After the initial flurry of Press activity in 1969, the crew of Apollo 11 returned to their lives and interviews became less and less frequent.

"Journalists the world over followed Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins and tried to squeeze every last piece of information from them about their adventure but, as is often the case, some stories had to be withheld.

"Now Apogee Books is proud to announce the first ever publication which will take you inside Apollo 11 as it journeyed to the moon, as told by the men who made the trip.

"This is the real story, nothing held back, taken from transcripts on July 31st 1969. It is often technical, it is sometimes surprising and amusing — but it is always educational and inspiring.

"This is the story of three men who travelled into the unknown, relying on each other and the hard work of the people back on Earth. Three men who pushed the envelope to a new limit.

"Taken from the crew’s own words Apollo 11 - The NASA Mission Reports Volume 2 will be informing people for generations."

From Back Cover:

"On July 24th 1969 the crew of the historic first manned mission to the moon and their spacecraft Columbia arrived on the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet.

"The flight of Apollo 11 had been an unqualified triumph. The goals laid out by President John F. Kennedy had been attained. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had walked on the dusty plains of the Sea of Tranquillity and had returned safely to the Earth with a treasure trove of unparalleled scientific information.

"Now it was the turn of the world’s scientific community to try and place all of this new knowledge into perspective. Hundreds of people around the world jostled for access to scraps of the lunar rocks and dust.

"As always NASA’s own managers, engineers and scientists were the first to pore over the details in an effort to maximise the return from future missions.

"Just prior to the launch of Apollo 12, NASA issued the Apollo 11 Mission Report. The document contained everything from the crew’s observations about the reflection off their faceplates to the interaction between the Lunar Module’s footpads and the dusty lunar surface.

"In Apollo 11 - The NASA Mission Reports Volume 3 the first comprehensive study of man’s first mission to another world is revealed in all of its startling complexity.

From Back Cover:

"When the crew of Apollo 11 returned to Earth in July 1969 they brought with them a wealth of new information about the moon. Now astronauts Charles (Pete) Conrad, Alan Bean and Richard Gordon would return to the moon and build on that knowledge.

"The real test for the crew of Apollo 12 was not to see if they could get to the moon, but to see if they could get to an exact place on the moon. Their target was in an area known as the Ocean Of Storms.

"On November 14 1969 the crew of Apollo 12 blasted off to their place in history. Not only would Conrad and Bean become the third and fourth men to walk on the moon but they would land the lunar module Intrepid within 600 feet of their designated target. Waiting for them was the unmanned space probe Surveyor 3 which had soft-landed in April 1967.

"The flight of Apollo 12, which began almost catastrophically when the huge Saturn V was struck by lightning just moments after lift off, went on to yield an enormous amount of valuable data collected during over seven and a half hours on the lunar surface.

"On their return home the crew of Apollo 12 became the first humans to witness an eclipse of the Sun by the Earth.

"In Apollo 12 – The NASA Mission Reports some of the rare official documentation of the voyage of Apollo 12 is collected and made commercially available for the first time.

From Back Cover:

"Homer himself could not have written a more captivating story than the flight of Apollo 13. On April 11, 1970 veteran astronaut Jim Lovell and his crewmates Jack Swigert and Fred Haise rode atop the eighth launch of the Saturn V juggernaut to begin their ill-fated journey to the moon.

"The aptly named Command Module Odyssey and the reluctant Lunar Module - lifeboat Aquarius were to take the three men to a date with the lunar highland area known as Fra Mauro but fate and a faulty circuit in one of the vehicle’s oxygen tanks would irrevocably alter their plans and turn the flight of Apollo 13 into an epic to rival the original Odyssey.

"After an explosion in the Service Module crippled the spacecraft while it was still outward bound the crew would spend several harrowing days in near frigid temperatures while the technicians at home worked around the clock to devise new and ingenious ways to keep them alive and bring them home safely.

"In 1970 some considered Apollo 13 a catastrophic failure but it has since been recognised as one of NASA’s truly great moments, when the spirit of daring and ingenuity came to life in the team at Mission Control as they successfully brought the crew home.

"In Apollo 13 – The NASA Mission Reports some of the rare official documentation of the voyage of Apollo 13 is collected and made commercially available for the first time.

From Back Cover:

"After the unfortunate accident which befell Apollo 13 the job of getting NASA back to the moon fell on the shoulders of America’s oldest astronaut Alan B. Shepard.

"Shepard had been grounded since the flight of Freedom 7 in 1961 due to an inner ear disorder. After undergoing treatment the ‘Icy Commander’ was bumped to the top of the flight roster and appointed to command the flight of Apollo 14 to the Fra Mauro highlands of the moon.

"Spending nearly 10 hours on the moon in February 1971 Shepard and Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell conducted a wide range of scientific experiments including Shepard’s unplanned test of the flight of a golf ball in lunar gravity.

"Once more the world sat and watched in awe as the United States successfully put two more men on the moon’s surface while Stuart Roosa orbited above in the Command Module Kitty Hawk.

"Shepard and Mitchell hiked almost to the top of a 400 foot crater before running out of time and returning to the Lunar Module Antares.

"Apollo 14 returned to the Earth with a treasure trove of lunar data and over 100 pounds of moon rocks.

From Back Cover:

"The legacy of the United States Apollo programme is rich in outstanding achievements but none more so than the first fully equipped lunar landing mission.

"Apollo 15 was the first moon landing to venture into the treacherous terrain of a lunar mountain range. After a perfect pin-point landing astronauts David Scott and James Irwin explored the mysterious Hadley Rille with the benefit of their electric lunar rover.

"Scott and Irwin had undergone extensive training in the science of geology and were to find the oldest rock ever to be brought back from the moon. The so-called ‘Genesis’ rock would answer many of man’s age-old questions about the origins of the moon.

"While the two men drove their remarkable vehicle through the lunar foothills their companion Alfred Worden spent several days running a battery of experiments from low lunar orbit, mapping the lunar terrain in unprecedented detail.

"In Apollo 15 – The NASA Mission Reports the amazing fourth lunar landing is explained in great depth with documents rarely seen by the public.

$19.95

From Back Cover:

"The landing site selected for the crew of Apollo 16 was in the lunar highland area of Descartes. NASA chose to send John Young to command the fifth lunar landing mission. Young had as much or more flight experience than any other member of the astronaut corps. He had circumnavigated the moon on Apollo 10 and he had flown two Gemini missions. Young would later go on to be the first commander of the Space Shuttle.

"The Descartes landing site was chosen because it appeared to be of volcanic origin. If it was, it might reveal secrets about the origins of the Earth.

"For three days Young and Duke embarked on their rover, away from the Lunar Module ‘Orion’, through rugged landscapes, in search of the origins of our world. Meanwhile Ken Mattingly shot hundreds of photographs and probed the moon’s magnetic field from the Command Module ‘Casper’.

"Back on Earth the political climate was beginning to turn against NASA and the remarkable risks and exploits undertaken by the crew of Apollo 16 went almost unnoticed by the American public.

"The three intrepid explorers and their spacecraft harvested a wealth of new data about the Earth-Moon system in an almost flawless performance of skill and bravado. Compiled here are many important documents about the mission including the complete debriefing in the crew’s own words.

The Bonus CD-ROM Features:

"The complete footage shot at Descartes as well as thousands of still pictures and an exclusive interview with Commander John Young. Over ten hours of video!"

From Back Cover:

"It was just past midnight in the early morning hours of December 7th 1972 when the last manned Saturn V roared from the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center. Strapped into the crowded Command Module were Commander Eugene Cernan, Command Module Pilot Ron Evans and Lunar Module Pilot/Geologist Harrison Schmitt. Their destination was a steep sided lunar valley on the edge of the Sea of Serenity, known as Taurus-Littrow.

"What the crew hoped to do was increase man’s store of knowledge about our nearest celestial neighbor by taking along a trained scientist for the first time.

"Harrison ‘Jack’ Schmitt was a fully qualified geologist who had been the man who contributed to all of the Apollo astronaut’s geological training. Now it would be his turn to witness first-hand the geology of another world. Accompanying Schmitt was another astronaut ‘rookie,’ CMP Ron Evans, who would be left in lunar orbit to map out the moon in unprecedented detail.

"Presiding over this highly trained crew was veteran Gemini and Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan, returning to the moon for a second time this time with the intention of living there for three days.

"Apollo 17 was the culmination of man’s greatest program of exploration. An unparalleled triumph of planning and technology flown by a team of professionals with expert precision.

"This book contains many of the internal NASA documents from this extraordinary voyage mad commercially available for the first time.

Virtual LM
by: Scott Sullivan

2004, 256p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-894959-14-0
$29.95

Comes with a CD-ROM!

On May 25, 1961, just 20 days after Alan Shepard's 15-minute sub orbital Mercury flight, president John F. Kennedy announced to congress his plan of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth before the end of the decade. The project would be called Apollo.

On November 7, 1962, NASA announced that Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, of Bethpage, New York, was selected to build the Apollo Lunar Excursion Module. Within seven years of winning the contract, the Grumman team had accomplished what many had said was impossible - despite schedule delays, budget overruns, seemingly endless design changes and congressional funding cuts, the Grumman team's perseverance and commitment to excellence produced the Apollo Lunar Module, the spacecraft that did land men on the Moon, six times, with never a failure.

On March 3 1969, Apollo 9 lifted off from Cape Kennedy with LM-3 on board, the first Lunar Module to fly in space, and it performed flawlessly, achieving all of its test objectives. During the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, the Lunar Module became the lifeboat that saved the crew's lives. The ascent module of the Apollo 17 LM, the final Lunar Module to fly, lifted off from the Moon's surface on December 13, 1972, and nothing to compare to it has been built since.

The complexity of the design and fabrication of the Apollo Lunar Module was rivaled only by that of the Apollo Command and Service Modules. Many of the engineering disciplines involved were stretched to the limits of the state of the art and beyond. Much of the fabrication was handcrafted and employed processes developed exclusively for this one project. It is hard to imagine that such a project could ever be undertaken again.

Now you can see the intricacies of the LM design and learn details of its manufacture, including some of the major problems that had to be overcome. Virtual LM, like Virtual Apollo before it, is a book dedicated to showing us the details of design and production using amazing full-color renderings of the structures, components, sub-assemblies and the completed spacecraft, accompanied by supporting descriptions.

Virtual LM shows us the Apollo Lunar Module as both an engineering masterpiece and a work of art. This book will be an essential part of any space enthusiast's library.

Bonus CD-ROM includes:

Apollo Operations Handbook, Apollo 14 Lunar Module Timeline, Apollo 15 Lunar

Module Cue Cards and Data Cards, Apollo 16 Contingency Checklist, and more . . .

Temporary Out of Print
Virtual Apollo

by Scott Sullivan, with an introduction by Tom Hanks

2002, 128p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-896522-94-7

With this book, for the first time the public can become acquainted with the Apollo spacecraft in detail and learn the story of its design and construction. Full color drawings in exacting detail provide inside and out views of the Command and Service Modules complete with details of construction and fabrication. The Apollo spacecraft is the most intricate and exacting machine ever built, and it had to be as near to perfect as it could be made, every time. With over 3 million components, a performance record of 99.9% would still leave 3,000 parts that could fail -- any one of which might result in the deaths of the crew. With the exception of Apollo 13, the spacecraft lived up to expectations on every lunar mission, and even Apollo 13, after a major explosion, managed to circle the Moon and bring its crew home safely. Virtual Apollo is a book long overdue; the care and completeness with which it has been created speak for themselves. Thanks to the dedication and hard work that have gone into this book, we can now truly appreciate the magnificent machine that was the Apollo spacecraft and marvel at the achievements of the many thousands of engineers and technicians who stayed on Earth but were on the mission every step of the way.

Apollo 12 , The NASA Mission Reports - vol. 2

by Robert Godwin

2004, 192p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-894959-16-7
$24.95

In November 1969 two more humans set foot on the lunar surface, in the process, further reinforcing the indisputable preeminence of the United States as the world's greatest technological power.

There was no longer any need to establish the high ground in the ideological struggles of the Cold War. Charles 'Pete' Conrad, Alan Bean and Richard Gordon were making the voyage with higher goals in mind-further testing the technology and making a start on real lunar science.

The average person may look into the following pages and see only statistics and charts but if you look hard enough you can see that they contain the hard-earned kernels of our collective future, a future as a spacefaring civilization.

Captured here are the details of leaky spacesuits, rockets struck by lightning, spacesuit cooling systems which stop working because the spacecraft's door got stuck closed and cameras which were disabled by dust. Or the details of the pinpoint landing by Pete Conrad, descending as fast as 170 feet a second, into a pall of lunar dust so thick he couldn't see his landing site from 40 feet away. If you want to know why that TV camera failed or just how badly decomposed the robotic Surveyor had become after three years on the moon, it's all here from the official NASA reports, accompanied by hours of rare and unique video of the Apollo 12 mission.

How NASA Learned To Fly In Space

by David Harland

2004, 288p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-894959-07-8
$90.00

OUT OF STOCK

NASA learned to fly in space in a time when the agency was young and lean, and had an explicit mandate of staggering audacity set against a tight deadline; in a time when the agency readily accepted risk, and made momentous decisions 'on the run'; in a time when a rendezvous was a major objective of a mission, in a time when opening the hatch and venturing outside was a serious challenge. Apollo claimed the glory, but it was Gemini that 'stretched the envelope' of spaceflight to make going to the Moon feasible. As Dr Robert Gilruth, director of the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, observed: "In order to go to the Moon, we had to learn how to operate in space. We had to learn how to manoeuvre with precision to rendezvous and to dock; to work outside in the hard vacuum of space; to endure long-duration in the weightless environment; and to learn how to make precise landings from orbital flight - that is where the Gemini Program came in."

David M Harland is a space historian whose prolific output in recent years includes 'Exploring the Moon - The Apollo Expeditions', 'The Story of the Space Shuttle' and 'The Story of Space Station Mir'. Based in Scotland, he lives in a small house full of books.

Space Tourism, Do You Want to Go?

by John Spencer and Karen L. Rugg

with a special foreword by Space Shuttle Commander Rick Searfoss

2004, 222p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-894959-08-6
$20.95

Welcome Aboard!

Space is only 100 miles away from anywhere on Earth. Since the early 1980s a small group of visionaries have been pioneering the frontier of off-world tourism. Overcoming significant obstacles, their quest to start the space tourism industry was achieved on April 28, 2001, when American businessman Dennis Tito lifted-off from Russia into Earth orbit for a weeklong voyage aboard the International Space Station. He was the first space tourist. Upon boarding the Station he said “I love space.” He paid millions of his own dollars to fulfill his life-long quest to experience space. Since then another space tourist has flown, and many more are lining up for the opportunity.

Millions of people from around the world want to go into Earth orbit to have that life-changing experience. To free float in zero gravity, to see the Earth, the Moon, and the stars from space. In the year 2004, less than 500 individuals have had the privilege of going off-world. But that number will significantly grow as private enterprise designs and builds the fleets of orbital access vehicles, orbital super yachts, and space and lunar cruise ships with names such as “Orbital Ecstasy,” “Ambrosia,” or “Lady of the Stars,” which will eventually serve tens of thousands, then hundreds of thousands of space tourist. Many of those going will have won international lotteries for their dream vacation.

In the future, space passengers will float and dance in zero gravity, swim in spheres of warm colored water, enjoy games, saunas, exercise, massage, shopping and world class entertainment. They can try zero gravity hairstyles, wear the latest in cruise fashions body paint and accessories. Participate in orbital sports, space walks, (floats) the finest dining and of course, make love in the privacy of their orbital cruise cabin. The Moon will play host to lunar resorts, health spas, and low gravity sports stadiums. The world will be thrilled as powerful racing yachts named “Challenger,” “Intrepid,” and “Quasar” compete in half million mile long space regattas around the Moon and back to Earth to win the coveted “Solar System Cup.”

Today millions of people have space tourism themed experiences spending well over a billion dollar a year flying in aircraft which produce zero gravity experiences, visiting NASA centers, space camps, space theme parks and attractions, space museum's, IMAX films, planetarium's and observatories, going on astronomy cruises, purchasing books, media, and space merchandise. This Earth based space tourism industry will have massive growth over the next decade as a whole new generation of totally immersive multi-day space, lunar, and Mars themed simulation ventures open to the public. For the price of a normal vacation people can become “Simnauts” and participate in futuristic space tourism vacations, adventures, and real research in the emerging “Sim Experiences” industry.

Several private enterprise space tourism companies have recently been formed, some by multibillionaires including the co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen, and the founder of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos. They are spending millions of dollars of their own money. Why? Because they are positioning themselves to be leaders -- the Walt Disney and Baron Hilton of the space tourism industry; an industry destined to be the largest, most prestigious, and profitable industry off-world.

The Simple UNIVERSE

By Ian Brester & Ken Shiwram, Foreword by Mark E. McGovern, Ph.D.

From Atomic Physics to Astronomy - Made Simple

Out of this world graphics - All in full color

2003, 108p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-894959-11-6
$21.95

No one knows how the universe will end - but we do have a pretty good idea how it started.  Everyone is familiar with the "Big Bang" theory, but most of us are a little vague as to the details.  In a similar manner, we all know the name Albert Einstein; he's the one who invented Relativity, which we all know about, but are perhaps a little hard pressed to describe in any detail.

To the rescue comes The Simple Universe.  This is a book for average people (that's you and me).  We've all been led to believe that in order to understand science you need a high forehead and a shirt pocket full of writing implements.  But, that's not really true.  This book walks you through it, from atomic physics right through to astronomy, with colorful graphics and understandable text.  The authors have shown us that the universe is indeed understandable (Einstein called it "comprehensible," and we won't argue with him).

Modern physics has undertaken a dedicated search for a theory that will knit relativity and quantum theory into one unified field theory.  In other words, the search is on for a set of physical laws that will account for the behavior of both atoms and whole galaxies.  This would be a "Unified Field Theory," also called the "Theory of Everything" (TOE).  This book will show you, in everyday language, both the known factors and the unknowns waiting to be answered.

The authors have also undertaken to enlighten us by providing the historical context of the quest to understand our universe.  They have even addressed the issues of Creationism versus Science, showing us that there is really no conflict involved.  This and much more are logically presented in The Simple Universe, even such startling concepts as multiple universes, all in a way that anyone can understand.

If you have an interest in understanding the universe, The Simple Universe is a good place to start because it takes a complex subject and makes it completely understandable.

The Rocket Team

by: Frederick I. Ordway III and Mitchell R. Sharpe

2003, 324p., Hard Cover,  ISBN 1-894959-00-0
$34.95

Traveling to the Moon and the planets beyond has moved from the world of dreamers and Buck Rogers to the factual terrain of the daily papers and television news shows. This book tells the story of the men who did so much to make the impossible a reality. From a small group of amateur rocketeers led by Wernher von Braun, his rocket team grew into one of the most influential technological forces in this or any other century. The Rocket Team discloses much previously classified information, particularly involving the British intelligence effort to learn about Hitler's heralded V1 and V2 "vengeance weapons"; to delay their going into action and to minimize their effectiveness once they were developed. The U.S. and British documents, as well as information from von Braun himself, his papers, and interviews with the other members of his team, provide new insights into the wartime growth of rocketry. FREDERICK I. ORDWAY III worked with Wernher von Braun at the former Army Ballistic Missile Agency and later at the NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. He is a member of many leading professional societies and is the author, co-author, or editor of more than thirty books and over three hundred articles. MITCHELL R. SHARPE has been closely identified with the national space program for more than twenty years and is the author of several books on space flight. This revised edition includes a disc which includes rare videos and images of the Rocket Team at work.

Includes bonus DVD video disc with hours of rare videos of the German rocket pioneers, including a one hour lecture by Wernher von Braun

Interstellar Travel & Multi-Generational Spacecraft

Edited by Yoji Kondo, Fredireck C. Bruhweiler, John Moore and Charles Sheffield

2003, 126p., Hard Cover, ISBN 1-896522-99-8
$24.95

Instead of blindly following popular preconceptions and biases about matters that we have not yet had the chance to test or verify, examined in this volume is our current state of knowledge, as well as our present state of ignorance, on subjects related to interstellar travel. The science and technology of the future that would be available for building interstellar space ships would indeed be quite different from those imagined from the perspectives of the early twenty-first century. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to start thinking what it will take to mount such an undertaking so that we can begin exploring various scientific and engineering possibilities now -- rather than wait endlessly for 'the right time' to come.

Apollo EECOM, Journey of a Lifetime

by: Sy Liebergot

2003, 216p., Hard Cover, ISBN 1-896522-96-3
$90.00

with special Forewords by Ron Howard (Director of "Apollo 13") and Clint Howard who played Sy in the movie.

Most of what we learn about NASA's space missions comes from statements carefully planned and massaged by managers and public relations people. With Apollo EECOM: Journey of a Lifetime we finally get an insider's view of how the Flight Controllers operated and just what they faced when events were crucial. This book is the life story of Sy Liebergot, former NASA Flight Controller, with emphasis on his years working in Mission Control. Following the disastrous tank explosion during the Apollo 13 mission, it was the Flight Controllers that made possible the safe return of the three endangered astronauts. Aboard Apollo 13, Lovell, Haise and Swigert performed wonders battling for their lives, but without the expertise, quick thinking and technical support of Mission Control, they never could have come home. Sy Liebergot was there and relates the details as they really happened. And Apollo 13 is just one of the many exciting stories he tells us. Truly and insider's view, this book discusses not just the events, but also the people that decided and enacted those events. These are the details that were never shown on anyone's TV screen; finally we get to learn what type of people the NASA Mission Controllers really were, and how they handled the demanding tasks that were theirs alone.

Lost Spacecraft, The Search for Liberty Bell 7

by: Curt Newport, Introduction by Tom Hanks

2002, 214p., Hard Cover with Dustjacket, ISBN 1-896522-88-2
$30.95

Comes with a CD-ROM with exclusive data about the Mercury Spacecraft and Curt's search.

Lost Spacecraft - the Search for Liberty Bell 7 describes the exploration of two unique and dangerous environments - space and underwater - and how the paths of two men, one living and one dead, crossed in the recovery of the Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft. "Lost Spacecraft" focuses on two periods, one beginning in 1959, the other in 1985, interweaving the stories of Project Mercury, Gus Grissom and his ill-fated Mercury flight, on-going developments in deep ocean exploration, and Curt Newport's 14-year obsession to raise the sunken space-age Titanic from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Also told is how Newport's team, against staggering odds, managed to find the phone-booth sized space vehicle during his harrowing 1999 expedition, only to see their recovery vehicle and Liberty Bell 7 ripped from their grasp by the forces of nature. Newport later recovered Liberty Bell 7 during what remains the deepest commercial salvage operation in history, returning Grissom's craft to Cape Canaveral, Florida thirty-eight years to the day after Grissom blasted off his tiny launch pad. However, the prevalent theme running through "Lost Spacecraft" is how simple luck almost rivals technical ability when exploring any deadly environment, whether it be the silent void of low-Earth orbit or the crushing cold of the abyss.

The Conquest of Space

by: David Lasser, with a foreword by Sir Arthur C. Clarke

2002, 192p., Hard Cover with Dustjacket, ISBN 1-896522-92-0 $23.95

"David Lasser stands as one of the least-known but extraordinary pioneers of spaceflight. In 1930 he founded the American Interplanetary Society (today's AIAA) - the same year he wrote this book - the first book ever written in the English language to address the notion of spaceflight as a serious possibility.

This book has not been in print since 1931 and yet it still stands up to scrutiny. The lucid style with which Lasser explains the basic concepts of rocketry make it a delight for anyone to read. Only a handful of errors creep into the text and all of those were based on the best information available at the time. The Conquest of Space is a milestone work of spaceflight literature and was state of the art in 1931. No space enthusiast's library is complete without it."

Temporary Out of Print -
on To Mars - Colonizing a New World

Edited by Robert Zubrin and Frank Crossman, The Mars Society

2002, 264p., Soft Cover, ISBN 1-896522-90-4

This book includes a CDROM with extensive video and over 60 papers from previous Mars Society Conventions!

In 1998 Dr. Robert Zubrin brought into being the Mars Society, and thousands of people from around the world have flocked to his banner.  People from all walks of life have shown support for the exploration and colonization of Mars.

Each year the Mars Society holds its annual conference, when experts and enthusiasts can meet to present and exchange ideas and information.  From the first four years' conferences have been chosen a wide variety of the many papers presented, and then collected together in one volume.

The future of mankind lies with the colonization of other planets, and eventually other solar systems, and colonizing Mars is the essential first step.  With its ever growing population and dwindling resources, the end of Earth's time as the sole home of humanity is drawing near.

In a life where most of us spend the majority of our time in the day-to-day activities of simply surviving, the people of the Mars Society are looking beyond the immediate future to the needs of the human race as a whole.  This embodies a definite sense of social responsibility.

Members of the Mars Society share with us their ideas, their knowledge, and their dreams, and encourage us to understand and commit to an important undertaking in the future survival of mankind.
