NATIONAL SPACE SOCIETY (NSS)
INTERNATIONAL SPACE DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE (ISDC) PROCEEDINGS

Every year a Space Development Conference is sponsored by various branches and associate organizations of the National Space Society. No proceedings were published for most of the Space Development Conferences. However, Univelt, Inc. has been publishing a few volumes.
The following volumes are available:

Proceedings of the 10th Annual International Space Development Conference, Space: A Call for Action, eds. Robert C. Blackledge, Carol Luckhardt Redfield, and Steven B. Seida, 1991, 404p, ISBN 0-912183-05-5, Soft Cover, list price $55.00, sale price $27.50; NSS (or other space society) individual member price $35.00, individual member sale price $17.50

This volume is based on papers presented at the conference held May 22-27, 1991, San Antonio, Texas. Over 80 papers, mostly in abstract form, are presented. Although space advocacy is emphasized many papers offer projections of space flight and colonization. Many are technical in nature covering space disciplines and technology, among them discussions of space stations, space manufacturing including microchip manufacturing in space, future technology, space colonies, planetary communities, a lunar-based chemical analysis laboratory, gravity stimulation in space, space medicine including a Mobile Emergency Trauma Hospital, space business and economics, low-cost space transportation, space education, and international programs. Illustrated. Index.

Proceedings of the 8th Annual International Space Development Conference, eds. Jeffrey G. Liss and Glenn H. Chapman, 1992, 636p, ISBN 0-912183-09-8, Soft Cover, list price $60.00; NSS (or other space society) individual member price $35.00

Based on papers presented at the conference held May 26-29, 1989, Chicago, Illinois. These proceedings reflect the many perspectives from which space development was viewed at the conference. Although all of the session papers are not included, the major symposia papers are included in their entirety — (1) Designing the Space Station, (2) Building a Moon Base, (3) The Exploration of Mars, (4) Law and Space, and (5) Medicine and Space. The high points of the other nine tracks are also included. Ninety different presenters are represented in all. Some of the segments are highly technical; some are more general. Collectively, they represent a snapshot of where we were in 1989 and an indication of what may be achieved. Although these proceedings have reached print well after the conference, we believe that, given the slow pace of space development, almost all the presentations included in this volume will still be highly relevant both now and for years to come.

Proceedings of the 7th Annual International Space Development Conference, Space: The Next Renaissance, ed. Jill Steele Mayer, 1991, 518p, ISBN 0-912183-06-3, Soft Cover, list price $60.00, sale price $30.00; NSS (or other space society) individual member price $35.00, individual member sale price $17.50

Based on papers—many of them updated—presented at the 1988 conference held in Denver, Colorado. Many volunteer editors made this volume possible. Overall views of space exploration are given including the Space Station, space transportation, space settlements and space careers. Another section is devoted to space education covering, among other things, some space education organizations. A third section treats grassroots space advocacy efforts. Another section deals with socioeconomics of space such as profitability of space, language, communications, political strategy, space colonies, an academy of space studies, a biochemical model for space skills, and space humanization. Another section covers technical matters such as antimatter, ceramic superconductors, machine intelligence in space, a human systems laboratory, biomedical problems, space adaptation by humans, food production on a lunar base, lunar base agriculture, a lunar base ecosystem, lunar oxygen, on-orbit assembly configurations, an international space port, external tank use, commercial space opportunities, a manned Mars Mission concept. A section on business opportunities in space is also included. Illustrated. Index.

Proceedings of the 4th Annual L5 Space Development Conference, ed. Frank Hecker, 1987, 268p, ISBN 0-87703-272-6, Hard Cover, list price $50.00, NSS (or other space society) individual member price $25.00; ISBN 0-87703-273-4, Soft Cover, list price $35.00, NSS (or other space society) individual member price $17.50

These proceedings are significant in that they are the first published record in the Space Development Conference Series. Sections on (1) space and U.S. politics, (2) political action workshop, (3) space resources, (4) international space, (5) space-age education, (6) space biomedicine, (7) communities in space, (8) the space tourist, (9) “pure” space sciences, and (10) the cultural drive for space are included. The keynote address given by Dr. Gerard K. O’Neill also appears in the volume. Although the conference was held April 25-28, 1985 (Washington, D.C.) much of the material has been updated up to the time of publication. It should therefore contain much valuable information. Illustrated. Appendix. Index.
