GENERAL DESCRIPTION
AMERICAN ASTRONAUTICAL SOCIETY HISTORY SERIES
The American Astronautical Society History Committee, first under the leadership of Eugene M. Emme, NASA Historian, established the AAS History Series in 1977 to dedicate the continued pursuit and broader appreciation of the full history of flight in American history and its global influences by producing, in published form Volume 1, Two Hundred Years of Flight in America, the proceedings of the first history symposium held at the National Air and Space Museum on November 4, 1976. This was accomplished knowing that any perspectives it afforded might prove of even greater archival value in the years to come.
To further record important historical works on space flight neglected by academic and commercial publishers the AAS History Committee established a series of symposia, workshops, and sessions-some held in conjunction with established AAS meetings-to generate material for this series. Some of these and other selected works were published in Volumes 2, 3, 5 and 18. The committee hopes to record much of the detail of the early developmental history of major rocket systems directly through publishing presentations made by pioneer innovators, managers, and other contributors to the first quarter century of modern astronautics before their direct inputs are lost. This part of the AAS History Committee program continues to provide valuable material, including Volume 13 of the series.
In 1985, under the series editorship of R. Cargill Hall, a subset of the AAS History Series was established (IAA History Symposia) to bring together all available papers presented at the International Academy of Astronautics History Symposia held in conjunction with the International Astronautical Federation Congresses. These history symposia have been held annually since 1967. Proceedings of the First and Second Symposia were originally published in 1974 by the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution Press, and the Third through Sixth by NASA in 1977. Since historical material retains its worth and these publications were out of print, they were reprinted as Volumes 6 and 7 in the AAS History Series (IAA History Symposia, Volumes 1 and 2). Since then, these symposia also have been published as collected works in the AAS History Series. Papers presented at subsequent symposia are published as they become available from the volume editors. Each volume consists of one to three IAA History Symposia. Among those published are Volumes 8-12, 14-15, and 17 (Volumes 3-10, IAA History Symposia). Now, under the series editorship of Donald C. Elder, these IAA volumes are being continued to be published; the most recently available being Volumes 19-21, AAS History Series (Volumes 11-13, IAA History Symposia).
The AAS History Series also includes selected monograms in the field of the history of astronautics of a scholarly nature (Volume 16).
For more information on the individual volumes cited, please refer to the appropriate descriptions included in the AAS History Series heading and sub-headings. The volumes are listed in numerical order under the main heading.
